The new WTB Weirwolf tire takes the previous generation's tread design and overhauls it. Don't worry it's for the better! Starting from the center, the "wolf paw" used to alternate between 4 and 3 tread blocks every row. Now there are 4 at every row. Now the transition knobs on the old tire... wait, it didn't have any - so the new Weirwolf adds very short but rider noticeable spine treads between the cornering knobs and center tread. The cornering knobs have also been revamped. They used to consist of a row of 4 knobs that angled slightly outwards. The new Weirwolf now has a 3 knobs row with a much less severe angle. But there's more. These new cornering block also are stepped towards the center tread. These three steps on each knob not only help the tire dig into the terra firma, but also transition better from transition knobs to cornering knobs.
The result is a tire with a dense tread that corners like it's on rails on just about any surface. The high knob count lends itself to rocky terrain, but the "new wolf paw" is still as fast rolling as ever and in a 2.1 width can hang with the hardcore XC tires, all the while providing more grip then they can. As such, the new WTB Weirwolf tire can handle surfaces from hardpack to mud and everything in between. The tire loves to lean, and does so with incredible confidence. Throw it into a corner and prepare to be amazed at how well this tire glues to the ground. It's an entirely new animal - one that's extremely user friendly and does basically whatever you want it to. Don't ask it to go slow though, it doesn't like that.
Choose the Race versions where tubeless compatibility isn't an issue. 2.3 Race uses WTB Super Track DNA compound (53a durometer) making it ideal for Free Ride situations where high volume and extreme grip are needed (think terrain parks). For rocky terrain, choose either the TCS or UST versions, and for maximum protection choose the AM TCS. TCS versions use Dual DNA rubber for better grip and fast rolling.
- Weirwolf weights:
- 26x2.1 Comp-850g, Race-702g, TCS-783g, UST-873g
- 26x2.3 Race-703g, AM TCS-953g, UST-896g
- DNA Rubber - proprietary 60a compound
- Dual DNA (50a/60a durometer) puts softer tread on corner knobs on AM TCS
- Both UST and TCS tires have UST beads
- TCS = Benefits of tubeless compatibility with weight reduced weight over UST
- AM (All Mountain) TCS version has an Inner Peace nylon strip in the sidewall
- Improved tread design inspires confidence on every corner
