The heart of the Hans Dampf is Schwalbe's TrailStar triple rubber compound. Soft rubber is nothing without control. A specially formulated base rubber is the crucial part of this system. It lays the foundation of the knobs. A soft rubber is laid over the center and an even softer rubber is laid over the sides. Schwalbe designed the Hans Dampf to grip while accelerating, braking, and corenering without sacrificing low rolling resistance. Yet the Hans Dampf is far from sluggish. The difference in Schwalbe's triple compound to other brands' is that Schwalbe forms all the knobs on the base layer, then uses the softer compounds to finish the tread. So every knob has a firmer center. This keeps the rolling resistance down because the whole knob doesn't simply deflect out of the way under load. The side knobs have an extremely slow rebound without feeling gooey, so you have control without having to worry about them wearing out after a few rides. 

A good tread isn't useful if rocks and other trail objects can get the best of your tire.
