Aero wheel sets are a dime a dozen these days. The difficult part for the consumer is filtering through the pretenders. HED has been innovating the aero wheel since the 80's, so they know a thing or two about making fast hoops. For the road biker, those hoops are going to be the HED Stinger 6 FR Wheels.
The first thing you notice about the Stinger 6 FRs is the width of the rim. HED pioneered the wide rim because it hugely improves comfort and tire performance, not to mention aerodynamics and crosswind stability benefit as well when used with a 23c tire. For 2011, that stability increases even more. HED went through their entire line of wheels for 2011 and tweaked the shapes to be more crosswind friendly. What they came up with is SCT or Stability Control Technology. It's widely known that HED wheels are the fastest, now they are also the most stable no matter which direction the wind is coming from.
But the 2011 Stinger 6 is not simply tweaked from last year's model; it's a whole new rim shape, much more like a different species altogether rather than an evolution. The 2011 HED Stinger 6 wheel is dramatically more aerodynamic than the previous model. HED says at a 15 degree wind yaw angle, the new Stinger 6 produces 100g less drag than the previous model. The overall result when combined with SCT tuning is a faster wheel no matter which direction the wind is coming from. The 2011 Stingers are also 20% stiffer laterally and 16% more impact resistant thanks to a new carbon layup schedule over the previous model. Thus the new Stingers are stronger and more resilient than previous models and add stiffness for those out of the saddle sprints.
The Stinger 6 FR wheels use HED's FR Sonic hubs. Incredibly smooth, light, and aerodynamic is the most accurate way to describe them. For 2011 the Flamme Rouge (FR) Sonic hubs have been made more serviceable via a grease port on the rear hub body. The result is quicker and easier service to keep the bearings rolling smoothly.
The previous version was ridden to overall victory at the 2010 Tour of California by Michael Rogers and used as the primary race wheel of the HTC-Columbia cycling team. Already proven as one of the best all-around race wheelsets on the market for 2010, the 2011 HED Stinger 6 FR wheelset is now par none in the road race wheel market.
