Everything Dakine makes is born out of neccessity. Dakine's employees all participate in the sports they make product for, and thus, their products are perfectly adapted for their activity. Their hydration packs are a perfect example— easy to use with plenty of features you'll use on the trail everyday.

The Apex pack is an awesome freeride pack, great for multi-day adventures, or just long rides where you might need lots of gear—there are pockets and storage all over it. Start with the external helmet and armor carry straps. The helmet carry flap securely holds an XC or full- face helmet, or armor, and deployable nylon straps on the bottom secure your knee guards. There's an extra zip pocket in the helmet flap lined with the same material Dakine uses in their surf packs to resist melting wax—perfect for storing chain lube away from food or tools.

Our favorite feature of Dakine's packs is the main organizer compartment. The zippers are designed so the pack opens flat, making it super- easy to access tools and supplies without digging around blindly in the bottom of your pack. The Apex has two mesh zip pockets and an elastic mesh pocket to hold all your jumbly bits, and a pump pocket to keep your hand pump easily accessible.

You may not even need to open the organizer compartment if you keep your most accessed items in the rolling-access side pockets. There are four; two on each side, one of which is fleece lined to protect your sunglasses or other fragile items.

If you're an epic-ride kind of athlete, you can stuff all the goods you need for several days in the gaping main compartment of the Apex. There's room for a jacket, dry clothes, a water purifier, and camp slippers for relaxing around the fire. If you're the type who needs visual evidence of your exploits, the Apex has you covered. The hanging dual-compartment storage pockets at the top of the main compartment will softly cradle a mini-cam or MP3 player in fleece-lined comfort. Use the zippered, top access pocket to stash goggles for your descents.

Dakine's Flowlock reservoir deserves it's own paragraph. The Apex comes with a 100 oz. (3 liter) Flowlock Reservoir; enough water for a three-hour -plus ride, and enough innovative features to increase your love of all things Dakine. The Reservoir sports a roll-top opening which makes adding liquid or drink mix a simple, spill-free operation. Another nice touch is the new ergonomic 45° bite valve with twist-on/off leak- proof operation. Our favorite features on the reservoir are the clip that integrates with Dakine packs to keep the reservoir upright during loading, and the magnificent detachable hose, allowing you to bring just the reservoir to the sink for a fill up. The separate, zippered reservoir compartment makes it easy to fill up for a ride.
Don't forget about the leak- proof, ergonomically adjustable bite valve that accommodates any angle of mouth grip.
