Specialized

Specialized was founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard, a cycling enthusiast who sold his Volkswagen Bus for $1,500 to start a business by importing bike components from Europe. Sinyard eventually started to make his own products, and the company exploded in 1981 with the introduction of the Stumpjumer, which was the first major production mountain bike in the world. An original Stumpjumper is displayed today in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The company today manufactures a variety of gear in addition to over 25 lines of bikes, including clothing, helmets, shoes, sunglasses and accessories. Specialized is distinctively known for placing many of their own parts on their bikes as stock, which is not a common practice among mountain bike companies.

Specialized sponsors numerous professional cyclists and teams, and has hundreds of international victories to its name. With such a vast product line and presence in the global cycling community, Specialized is the most recognized bike company in the world.
