Some of the coolest recent advancements in cycling have come from SRAM cassettes. While other manufacturers are content to stand by and watch, SRAM has reinvented the cassette not once, but twice. The SRAM XG-1080 cassette is not made from a single piece of steel like the X-Dome or Power Dome, and it's not made in the same way as the common cassette.
Instead, the largest 7 cogs are forged out of steel and riveted to each other in a manner such that only 2 rings share the same rivets. SRAM is able to eliminate large amounts of steel by building the 1080 this way, yet keep it incredibly strong. Each ring is minimally machined, most of the cut-outs are achieved during the forging process making them much stronger for it. The smaller 3 rings are individual and connect in the normal manner.
The XG-1080 cassette comes with a lockring and is only available in the 11-36 size. Utilizing X-Glide technology, the SRAM XG-1080 cassette produces fast shifts and quiet operation. A marvel of engineering ingenuity, the XG-1080 cassette gives you XX performance for a lot less.
